Research Initiative Award

The seventh instalment of the Latin American Forum will be held on 13th and 14th of February 2018 with the topic “Cooperation: A sustainable approach to inequality in Latin America”. This year's Forum invites current postgraduate research (PhD/MPhil) students to participate in the first “Research Initiative Award”, awarded on behalf of the Center for Contemporary Latin American Studies of the University of Edinburgh.

 

 

 

 

Professor Sir Timothy O’Shea, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, and Daniel Sierra Kieswetter, the President of the 2017 Edinburgh Latin American Forum.  

 

 

The Research Initiative Award aims to promote knowledge generation and possible solutions on the thematic areas of interest for this edition of the Forum. The first edition of the award therefore, will include research topics in line with the four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that lead the Forum’s agenda, which are:

 

  • #5 Gender Equality

  • #7 Affordable and Clean Energy

  • #10 Reduced Inequalities

  • #16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

To take part of the award, the candidates are required to submit an abstract of 300 words on the research topic by January 31st. The abstract should include the aim of the investigation and expected outcomes, as well as how it contributes knowledge to the themes of this year’s Forum. There will be a pre-selection of abstracts and the final 6 candidates will need to present their poster (420 x 594 mm) on February 13th.

 

A panel comprising a selection of invited speakers will judge the initiatives to grant the award following the criteria below. The first prize will be £100.

 

Criteria for Assessment:

 

  • The extent to which the proposal addresses the four SDGs leading the Forum’s agenda,

  • The relevance of the research to the Latin America region,

  • The feasibility of the application of the research,

  • The level in which the research could have a direct impact on communities,

  • Innovative methodological approach,

  • Presentation skills.
