Julia Calvert

Dr. Julia Calvert will participate as a speaker in our session “Foreign Direct Investment and Trade” on February 5th.

Dr. Calvert, originally from Canada, is a lecturer on International Political Economy at the School of Social and Political Science of the University of Edinburgh. Her research examines the impacts bilateral investment treaties have on policy, with a special focus on Latin America. She is interested in analysing the ways in which the conditions and capabilities of signatory countries shape and are shaped by the constraints that these treaties impose. A key point in her research is how governments and civil society groups defend public and political interests from the claims of foreign investors under these treaties.

Dr. Calvert also analyses how mining companies govern their global production networks and how political controversies arise from this situation.
